1.  Is there an orientation for new volunteers so I know what to expect?

Yes, we do have an orientation for new volunteers. If you are part of a volunteer group, you can attend an orientation on the day of your community service project.  As an individual volunteer, either you can come to one of our monthly group orientations, or we can arrange an individual orientation.

2.  What service project do you recommended for a new volunteer?

Many new volunteers find that working in our soup kitchen is a great way to interact with clients and staff.

3.  I have a busy life, and I work during the day.  Is there a way for me to volunteer in my spare time?

We do not currently offer evening volunteer projects, but we do have weekend opportunities for working people.  These include building beautification projects, food services, vocational coaching, and special workshops.

4.  I’ve never been to a Drop-In Center before.  What should I expect?

You will see all types of people at Mainchance. Many people have preconceived notions about what it means to be homeless, but every client has a different story about how they came to be without shelter.  You will find that our Drop-In Center is a safe environment.

5.  My organization has a group of children that want to help out with holiday meal service.  Is there an age requirement for volunteering?

GCNSSC accepts volunteers 15 and over, but if they are with a school group or with a parent and are at least 13, we can make an exception.  For youth under 15, activities would be limited to food services, art projects and building beautification projects.
